  • Ion exchange is the process that takes place in water softeners; ions that contribute to water hardness—calcium and magnesium—are exchanged for sodium on the surface of the solid.
  • Ammonium, a major component of fertilizer and manure, is very soluble in water, and increased concentrations of nitrate that result from nitrification of ammonium commonly are present in both ground water and surface water associated with agricultural lands (see Box O).
  • An example is the release of calcium ions (Ca++) and bicarbonate ions (HCO3 −) when calcite (CaCO3) in limestone is dissolved.
  • Carbonate reefs and carbonate sediments form in tropical regions where there is little input of clastic sediments.
  • At these locations, the solid material iron hydroxide is formed when iron dissolved in ground water comes in contact with oxygen dissolved in surface water.
  • Nitrate concentrations are increasing in much of the Nation's water, but they are particularly high in ground water in the midcontinent region of the United States.
