Fluvial geomorphology is the study of how rivers and streams shape the Earth's surface through the movement and deposition of sediments. Rivers carry sediments of various sizes, from fine silt to large boulders, and these sediments form distinctive landforms such as floodplains, meanders, and alluvial fans. The processes involved include erosion, transportation, and deposition, which are influenced by factors like water velocity, sediment size, and the characteristics of the riverbed.

Fluvial geomorphology studies how rivers shape Earth’s surface by moving and dropping sediments. Rivers carry sediments like sand, gravel, and even boulders during big floods. Water speed, sediment size, and riverbed features control how these processes work.

Areas where more sediment drops are called floodplains. Large rivers carry huge amounts of sediment yearly. The way sediment moves in water creates patterns like ripples and dunes.

These patterns help scientists understand river flow and sediment history. Meanders are the winding curves in rivers. They form when water erodes the outer bank and deposits sediment on the inner bank.

This makes the river bend more over time. The movement of water inside the river causes erosion on the outside and deposition on the inside. Meanders can shift their path, sometimes causing problems for roads and bridges.

Alluvial fans are fan-shaped deposits of sediment where rivers leave narrow canyons and spread out. They are common in dry areas and form when water slows down and drops its load. These fans can be huge, covering thousands of square kilometers.

They are important for groundwater and can cause dangerous floods.
