Colligative properties depend on the number of solute particles in a solution, not their identity. These properties include vapor pressure lowering, boiling point elevation, freezing point depression, and osmotic pressure. When a nonvolatile solute dissolves in a solvent, it reduces the solvent's vapor pressure.
This happens because solute particles occupy space at the surface, reducing the number of solvent molecules that can escape into the vapor phase. The vapor pressure lowering is directly proportional to the mole fraction of the solute, as described by Raoult’s law. Boiling point elevation occurs because the lowered vapor pressure means the solution must be heated to a higher temperature to match the atmospheric pressure.
The increase in boiling point is directly proportional to the molality of the solute and the solvent's ebullioscopic constant. Similarly, freezing point depression happens because solute particles disrupt the formation of the solid phase, requiring a lower temperature to freeze. This decrease in freezing point is directly proportional to the molality of the solute and the solvent's cryoscopic constant.
Osmotic pressure is another colligative property. It is the pressure needed to stop the flow of solvent through a semipermeable membrane into a solution. Osmotic pressure is directly proportional to the concentration of solute particles, the absolute temperature, and the van 't Hoff factor, which accounts for the number of particles a solute dissociates into.
These properties are essential in various applications, from food preservation to medical treatments and industrial processes.
